A Day At Hillwood

Full of Action and Ready to Play!

Two years ago, the school had a dog named Zach.  He was everyone's favorite playmate.  But he wasn't very playful.  Zach had a hernia in is hind legs.  He was extremely gentle.  I, Claire, used to feed him every morning and he was really nice to be with.  Zach passed away when he was fourteen years old. No one wanted it to happen but it was the right thing to do to put him down.  A year later, Mr. and Mrs. Grantz got a new puppy.  They decided to name him Maximilien.  He was very playful and everybody loved him.  He was about eight weeks old when they got him and he was super small.    We would always play with him in the morning if we got to school early and we would play with him after school if we were here late.

Right now, he is a year old but he doesn't stay at school all the time. Instead, he went out with his dog walker every other day.  It was good for him because he got out a lot.  It was also good for everybody in the school so that they didn't get distracted. Whenever Max was not with his dog walker, he spends time at school and whenever he gets loose he goes down to the K-1 and they always got scared.  Same with some of the 2-4 graders. Whenever I see him near my house, I always like to play with him.

Whenever Max goes with the dog walker, Max spends the entire day with him. After school, I go to where he walks around.  It is nice to go and see him because I don't get to see him for the whole day.    Max is a very playful dog and every one likes to spend time with him.

Adventures at the Cabin!

Along with the awesomeness of Hillwood itself, there is also the Hillwood Cabin! Yes, you heard me right! Hillwood has its own cabin up in Muir Woods. At the end of each year, there is an overnight there for 4th-8th grade girls and boys. Girls and boys go at different times. Also, there is Hillwood's birthday. We celebrate that at the cabin as well!

When we go to the cabin, we always have barbecue! Lots of people come! Mr. Grantz is usually the one who makes the barbecue! Yum yum! Children enjoy catching salamanders in the creek near by.

"I like going to the cabin because I get to spend time with my friends, and we have lots of fun creating movies and using our imaginations!" says 5th grader Mia L.

On the overnight, we get cinnamon roles and hot cocoa! Students enjoy them very much for they are homemade by Mrs. Grantz!

"It's very delicious and fun to eat in the morning, because it's so cold!" says 6th grader Asiana D.

Last year, the girls made a horror movie at the cabin called Rosy Posy.

"It's a very fun experience because we are away from home," says Asiana.

"It's a very good chance to connect with the outdoors," adds 8th grader Anya J.

We also take long hikes during our fun time at the cabin. Some children don't want to join after experiencing the wrath of long trails. Others still go.

"Sometimes it's very tiring, but I still go every single time. The main reason is probably that I forget how much I suffered last time and go yet again." says 8th grader Rubina H.

The cabin is a very fun place for us!

Field Trips and Glide!

Field trips at Hillwood are usually really fun. Two years ago the 2-8th grade went to see a play known as the Beauty and Mercy High School is an all girls school, but the boys that were acting in the play came from different schools. After the play was over all the actors and actresses came outside  to hang out with friends and everything.  Last year when Mrs.Woods was still at Hillwood she took us to go and watch Hunger Games in a Japantown theater. the day before the field trip Mrs.Woods wrote a list down on what candied we liked and she went to Target and bought all the candies on the list. We also went to the Kabuki theater and watched a documentary about a girls passion about one elephant that had to be given away. It was a very tragic story. The k-4th grades usually go to the Academy of  Sciences about once a year. What they do is they just walk around and explore and have bagged lunches.Speaking about field trips coincidentally on Monday, the 2-8th grade will be going to see a play called We the People Play.
Another very fun trip that the upper graders took was to volunteer at Glide Memorial to help prepare the lunches. We were the only children there! All the Hillwood students paired up into two and did different jobs. Oliver and I had to put  all the rotten apples into the compost and but all the good apples into bins. There was so many boxes of apples to go through. I was really sad about not getting to pass out lunch to the homeless people but too many people signed up to do that. But it was still fun to prepare the lunch. Even though it was a little over whelming and didn't smell great I would still go back and help again!!

Hillwood History 1949-2013. What has been done in the past is still being done today, and it might never last.

In 1949, Harry S. Truman became president. Color TV was broadcasted and perfected by RCA. What many of you don't know is that a new school was founded called Hillwood Academic Day School. 64 years it's been since it was opened. Our school is based in a house. The house was originally built in 1893. The founder of this school was Mary J. Libra.  She soon started camp Hillwood, located in Muir Woods since 1890. Sadly in 1993, Mrs. Libra passed away and the school was taken over by Mr. Eric Grantz and Mrs. Gayle Grantz, his wife, ever since.

So many things in Hillwood have changed, and yet so many things stayed the same. Many new students have applied to Hillwood and many teachers have joined and were happy to work here. And yet, since 1949 till 2013, the traditions the school had are still being done today.

The Incredible Tale of the Upper-Graders

The upper-graders, or fifth through eighth graders, have been enjoying themselves momentously this year. Not only did they have the luck to receive a magnificent teacher and a new student, they received tons of sweet surprises. From little movie days to a week in Washington D.C, the upper-graders had no time to call in sick. In such a small community, everyone knows everyone, which means no one is ever left out. It doesn't take much to see that everyone has a friend, or maybe eight! This year, the upper-graders summed up to only nine kids. That means that everyone can receive the individualized attention they need. In math, science, history and language arts, we are all well educated thanks to our wonderful teacher and the help of everyone else who gave a hand. From art to music, to the blogging that helps make what you're reading, everyone gets a hands-on experience that's impossible to turn down. No one is improperly judged in the fantastic learning experience that can't come close to words. No one goes home empty handed in this this fantastic aurora of education.
A normal day consists of beginning with math in which we get the best education we can, followed by a relaxing break where we can enjoy spending time together, then we return to complete our math, then literature, lunch, etc. No matter how the day goes, we always end up with smiles on our faces in the end.

Full of Talent

Every year, the day before winter break and the last day of school, there is a talent show.  The first talent show is always themed for Christmas.  It is always fun because we sing Christmas carols and we also have secret santa which also fun but it is not during the talent show.

The day of the Christmas talent show it always starts with Secret Santa and other fun things.  Then  we start the talent show. During the talent show, Kasama, does break dancing with Oliver, Jojo, and Gregory.  Grace does some ballet which is always really cute. I, Claire, play violin for all of the talent shows and some of the students from K-1 sing some songs from famous singers. Many people do thier own talent but there is always Mrs. Schmitt to sing some Christmas songs. The K-1 sing an easy Christmas song, the 2-4 graders sing something different, and 5-8 sing something else.  Everybody sings a Spanish song with Ms. Lidia. The song that the K-1 sing is always  easy and really cute because they always act or dance in it.  The 2-4 graders sing something a little harder than the K-1 but it is also interesting to see what they do. The 5-8 sing something harder then the other students songs but it is always really fun.

Then the second talent show is always the same but we don't sing Christmas songs.  The K-1 sing a song  that they all really enjoy singing. The 2-4 sing something that they really like and same thing for 5-8.  We always sing another Spanish song and we always enjoy that too.

Both of the talent shows are really fun and I think everybody enjoys them!

Field Day

Field Day, on a Friday, was when all of the students of Hillwood Academic Day School went to Alta Plaza Park and played games. Everyone split into groups of three and went to different games. There was a balloon toss, sack races, just races, two-legged race, and tug of friendship. Each group had a card with which game they had to go to first. Once they got through all of the games at least once, they could go to any game. Close to the end of field day, the kindergardeners and the Upper Graders had to play tug of friendship against the second through fourth graders. The second through fourth graders won... But the games didn't end until everyone played Sharks and Minnows.
After the games, we all got a Jumba juice, the chooses being mango, very berry, or strawberry banana. While we were finishing our Jumba juice, Tracey and Karen passed out flowers to each person for being nice, a good-sport, helpful, etc.
Not to forget another fun part of the day, we made a harlem shake video. Ariana got to put on a monkey mask and be the first to dance. For a few minutes, she danced alone while everyone else was in the background talking to each other or playing a game. The camera cut and the next video was where everyone was dancing randomly. The idea was Dan Shine's and he put the brilliant video together.

Mrs. Marta Yow and Lunch at Hillwood!

Mrs. Marta is the cook at Hillwood! Yum yum! Lunch is different every day and varies from mac and cheese to soup to tacos! Wow! Lunch starts at 11:30 and ends at 12:00. Two lunch monitors from the upper grades go down to the kitchen and bring the lunch up to the class. Ms. Kathy Tom's class (2nd - 4th) and Mrs. Lauren Carvajals class (K-1st) get served lunch by Mrs. Marta herself. Lunch starts at the same time for everyone.

P.S. Lunch is very good!

EspaƱol at Hillwood!

Hola, ¿como estas? Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez! Miss Lidia Cortina teaches Spanish at Hillwood. Spanish with her is very fun. We recently learned the verb to be. We also learned the family members.

Miss Lidia comes at 2:00 to 3:00 on Tuesdays for Mrs. Carvajals class, 2:00 to 3:00 on Wednesday for Mrs. Milliken's class, and 2:00 to 3:00 on Thursday for Ms. Tom's class. Different classes learn different Spanish songs for the talent show. Sometimes, we even dance...

Spanish at Hillwood is lots of fun! Adios!

Fridays at Hillwood

A day at Hillwood isn't as interesting as Fridays are! Fridays are the most fun days at Hillwood (partially because there isn't much work to do!). Fridays start out with computer class with parent volunteer Laura Moorhead in the upper grades. Then, comes art. After that is lunch, then park (Anna Seven takes the upper-graders to the park), then study hall (with Ms. Samantha Caine), spelling test, and then history. That's Friday at Hillwood in the upper-grades! The first Friday of the month is free dress! That's when you can wear your own clothing! Woohoo! Happy Campers!

Fridays end with a movie for everyone! Movies vary every week. At some times, they are Pixar movies, and other times they are Disney movies. Sometimes they are even Lionsgate movies! Needless to say, Fridays are the most fun days in the week!

Art at Hillwood

Anna Seven
Anna Seven is the art teacher at Hillwood. She is a parent volunteer who comes every Friday. Her art projects are always very different and fun! This year, our major project was making alphabet books for the k-1st graders. Anna Seven herself is also an artist. Her style is Randomness Assumption and she paints in figurative abstract. Art with her is super fun!

Anna Seven's Still Life

Miss Lidia Cortina is the Spanish teacher at Hillwood, but except for that she is the art teacher after school. Her art, unlike Anna's, has more of a crafty style. The children in her class cut out pieces of paper and glue them to objects. Other times, she has a fashion design assignment. That is when the fun begins! Children bring in old and unwanted clothing and make new, beautiful clothing out of it! How awesome is that?

Here's an interview I got out of her:

Do you enjoy working with the children?

Working with children is always fun. They get easily inspired by very simple, everyday subjects. It's reassuring to see how grateful children are towards plain joys of life.

What style of art do children enjoy the most?

Children would like any style of art. It only depends on how the certain style of art is represented to them. Children are open-minded and honest. They observe information. Their minds are fresh. They are curious and ready to learn.

Do the younger children like to draw more than the older children? Or is it the other way around?

The inner freedom of an artist is the most important component of success. From that point of view, the youngest children are the best. But they definitely lack the necessary technical skills. Teenagers are better in skills, but their fear of failure is bigger and they are oversensitive to criticism. So, instead of improving their skills and work, teenagers often stop working only because they don't want to be judged. So, in my subjective opinion, the class of Ms. Tom [Kathy Tom. 2nd-4th grades] is the best. They have enough skills for self-expression and they are less concerned about public opinion. The children in the 2nd through 4th grades are the bravest artists at Hillwood!

Music At Hillwood

Gayle Schmitt is the music teacher at Hillwood Academic Day School. Every Wednesday, Gayle Schmitt comes to Hillwood and she goes to every classroom and sings Country Music. 2nd - 4th grades and 5th - 8th grades have music books. Kindergarten - 1st don't.

Gayle has her own band for children called The Toodala Ramblers. She gives a recital every year and she invites older children from Hillwood to help her perform. We dance and entertain the children in the audience while Gayle and her band, fiddle, two guitars, banjo and bass, play music and sing.

She has a regular guitar. Children love her! She is very entertaining! The little children sometimes dance and sing with her.

Miss Ann is the guitar teacher at Hillwood. She comes every Thursday after school. They mostly play rock n' roll. Lots of fun! Children play in ensembles at the end of the year!

What class (out of the three) enjoys singing the most?
"Singing is such a universal and natural way to express oneself I really feel all ages of people like to sing….there’s something about singing with other people that I think is very powerful - like a big community.

"As far as the three classes at Hillwood…..

"With the younger group they like to sing familiar songs and also love when a song can be acted out or  includes some movement.
The 2nd  – 4th graders I think really enjoy having the “sing-a-long” books to follow along with and because of this might enjoy the group singing the most of the three groups. The 5-8th graders this year also really like to sing together and know many of the songs from our books by heart! They are also wanting to sing more popular songs that they hear on the radio which is good for me because it means I get to learn new songs too!"

What songs do children enjoy the most?
"Favorite songs this year are – Rattlin’ Bog,  The Ladybug Song, Habitat, Glenridge Train, Jennie Jenkins, Wabash Cannonball, Winter’s Come and Gone (a favorite of mine by songwriter Gillian Welch), How Many Biscuits, Old Joe Clar, Who Killed Poor Robin?, The Cat Came Back, Waltzing With Bears, Swinging From a Star, Blowin’ in the Wind, Let it Be, and Why Can’t We Be friends?"

Do you enjoy working with older children, or younger ones?
"I enjoy each group for different reasons. Most of the other schools I teach at in San Francisco are for very young children (Pre-K) so I love that I have a chance to work with school – age kids at Hillwood. Each group gives me an opportunity to explore music in a different way. It’s why I love my job so much because music offers many ways to express itself. Singing as a group, singing solo, singing on only the chorus of a song, singing a song along with an instrument, dancing/moving to a song, acting out a song, discussing the story of a song, discussing the poetry of a song or even just listening to songs that make us feel a certain way …..I always hope the Hillwood students learn a song or two that they love and  might even find themselves humming or singing this song when they are by themselves at home."

"Iron Man" Died

"Iron Lady" was United Kingdom's vise minister. Her name was Margaret Thatcher. She died on Monday April 8, 2013 at age 87. She served for the prime minister for more than 11 years longer than other prime ministers served for United Kingdom. She was also the only female prime minister for now in the 20th century. Before she was prime minister she was a lawyer and a chemist. She first started politics in 1959.

A Day at Hillwood

Starting at 7:45, students start coming into school.  The later into the morning it gets, the more students arrive.  Before school, students finish their schoolwork, play on the computers, or just talk to their friends.  It's 9:00!  Hillwood students rush into their classrooms.  School has started and the children are ready to learn.

Most students start their day with the pledge.  Then, they do math.  As the day goes on, students do different subjects, including reading/writing, history, and science.  On Tuesdays, K-1 has Spanish, on Wednesdays, 5-8, and Thursdays, 2-4.  Also on Wednesdays, all of the grades have music.

At 11:30, lunch starts.  Mrs. Marta prepares hot lunches for the students to eat.  After lunch, it's recess.  The 5-8 graders go to the park for our equivalent of PE.  We play kickball, tennis, basketball, and dodgeball.

Starting at 3:00, students start leaving, but some stay as late as 6:00.  Ms. Caine watches the students after school.  At 5:00, Ms. Caine serves snack.  Students work on homework, read, and play outside after school.  After our fun day at Hillwood, we go home.

Trip to Jamestown

On our trip to D.C. we went to the remake of Jamestown. At Jamestown there are three remade ships that resemble the original three that sailed to the New World in 1607. The three ships are called the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. There is also a remade a Powhatan tribe, the Powhatan
tribe was a tribe that inhabited the "New World".

Epic Fail

When You think that a ladybug can always fly, then you are wrong.  There is a video of a ladybug trying to fly off of a leaf.  But instead of flying up, the ladybug flys down and doesn't come back up.  If you want to see the video just go to http://vimeo.com/63181344 and look for the video called Ladybug Flight Fail.  When you watch the video you will notice that the video is extremely slow.  If it was fast you would not be able to tell what the ladybug was doing or if it failed during its flight.  It is really cool and anyone will laugh about it.

A rare phenomenon of the changing oceans

Snakes with two heads have been head of, as well as two headed turtles, cats, and even children all have the displeasure of a too close for comfort sibling, but only a half dozen cases have claimed a two headed shark. All these mutant creatures inherent a physical mutation scientifically called "axial bifurcation"in which the sperm doesn't finish splitting before entering the world. These individuals, should that be the right term, do not commonly survive in the wild, because they have trouble escaping predators and catching prey.

This sharks popularity all began when a fisherman caught a hammerhead in his net, surprised for there to be two live embryos in his net, one our little star with another star attached. The fisherman handed their catch to scientist to further investigate. It is still undecided wether this odd mutant can teach us about the oceans health, or if hes just a rare phenomenon caught on tape...and in a net.(Picture on right shows the x-ray of the sharks in which the cartilage is seen due to the fact that sharks have bone.)

Working in different Workshops in D.C!

In Washington D.C we had something called workshops in D.C. After our long day exploring all the monuments in D.C, we returned back to the hotel and had workshops. Workshop was basically a small class where we discussed what we did during the day. We talked about rights in the government and we answered many questions. We did lots in workshop. Every time we would arrive in our destination we would meet up in our workshops and venture off. The Hillwood students scattered up in different workshops a few students were in the same workshops. Many students from Hillwood weren't big fans of the Workshops because after the whole entire day everyone was tired and just wanted to go back to their rooms. Workshop was a fun experience for me but it was still very tiring at times. The Hillwood students would be willing to have workshops again if there were more debates for rights.

World War II Memorial

The first place we went to in Washington D.C., besides the hotel, was the World War II Memorial. The World War II Memorial is between two of the important and well-known structures in D.C., the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It was built in remembrance of all the places that fought during the war. The Memorial has two arches, opposite each other, Pacific that's written on the left arch and Atlantic that's written on the right, if your looking towards Lincoln Memorial. In a circle all the 50 states were connected by a bronze rope.
When we went there, half of the memorial was under construction, so the Rainbow pool wasn't working. The program gave us these small books which we had to do many things in them like answer questions or fill in the blanks, and more. We used  those books to answer questions on some of the engravings in the all that have different pictures of acts during the war. We talked about some of the facts of World War II and it wasn't long until we moved on to our next destination.

Getting Ready For The Yearbook!!!

It is now time for this year's yearbook! Possible stories: Music at Hillwood (Miss Anne and Mrs. Schmitt. Don't forget the Toodala Rambler's show!), Foreign Languages at Hillwood (Miss Lidia), Trip to D.C. (Upper Graders go to Washington D.C.), Exploratorium Field Trip (Upper Graders), and Field Day (Whole school). If anybody knows more topics, please share! Thank you.

Assignments, April 12

It's yearbook time — Angela, Anya, and Rubina, you three are leading the way. Work together to figure out the best way to get organized. You will be making assignments to your peers. What needs to be written and by when?

While those three get organized.....

Oliver: Highlight a frog's epic fail or write about why there will be no Blue Angels this year (this latter story could be your entry for next year's Scholastic News contest). Of course, if you are writing a paper about tobacco use, you might want to research or consider this.

frogfail1 from Alexis Madrigal on Vimeo.

Natasha: Tell us how to recycle better. What can Ms. Moorhead do with cat pooh? Her compost depends on you!

Mia: Who was the Iron Lady?

Asiana: What is happening in Africa with locus. Oh, and what are locus?

Kennedy: A missing plate in California?

Claire: A lion, a lemur, or a bat-eared fox? And/or what's happening at the SF Zoo?

Lorenzo Da Ponte: Memoirs

I'm back again with my homework over different breaks:/ This time, over Easter break, I have been assigned to write a review on my book report. The book was Lorenzo Da Ponte: Memoirs. So, here it is! Enjoy!

This stunning depiction of Lorenzo Da Ponte's life, from Da Ponte's perspective, will vividly lighten your day! Why did Da Ponte do what he did? How did he handle the situation? The information that you read on Wikipedia or any other source cannot beat this tale of Da Ponte's life.

Don't know who Da Ponte was? What about Mozart? I bet you know who Mozart was! Everybody knows Mozart! Mozart wrote many operas, three of which are Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, and Don Giovanni. "What does this have anything to do with some guy named Da Ponte?" That's what you're probably thinking right now. But wait! All three libretti were written by Lorenzo Da Ponte! To be more precise, Da Ponte started writing the libretto for Cosi fan tutte for another composer named Antonio Salieri. For some unfathomable reason, Mozart ended up writing the opera itself. Don't ask me why.

I give the memoirs four and a half stars. Definitely recommend this to any classical music lover!!!

Movie Review: Oz the Great and Powerful

On February 14, 2013, Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful came out. The movie was based on L. Frank Baum's "Oz" works. A prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful tells us the story of how the wizard himself ended up in Oz, and established himself as a wizard. The screenplay was written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Kapner also wrote the screen story. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie included Mila Kunis as Theodora, James Franco as Oz, Rachel Weisz as Evanora, Michelle Williams as Glinda, Zach Braff as Finley's voice, Joey King as the China Girl's voice, Bill Cobbs as Master Tinker, and others. The composer for this film was Danny Elfman.

L. Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) was born in Chittenango, New York, into a Methodist family. Coming from a German, Scots-Irish, and English descent, he was the 7th child out of 9. His parents, Cynthia Ann nee Stanton and Benjamin Ward Baum, named their son Lyman after his father's brother. Unfortunately, Baum always disliked this name, and preferred to go by his middle name, "Frank". His mother, Cynthia, was a direct descendant of Thomas Stanton, "one of the four Founders of what is now Stonington, Connecticut". His father, Benjamin, was a businessman who was originally a barrel maker.

David Lindsay-Abaire was born on November 30, 1969. He is an American playwright, lyricist, and screenwriter. His 2007 play Rabbit Hole earned the Pultizer Prize for Drama and several Tony Award nominations.

Sam Raimi was born on October 23, 1959. He is an American film director, producer, actor, and writer. He is most famous for directing Evil Dead seriesDarkman, and the Spider-Man trilogy. Being the 4th child out of 5, Raimi was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, and grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. He was from a family that practiced Conservative Judaism. Raimi was inspired to film movies after his father brought a camera and began to make Super 8 movies with a friend.

Danny Elfman, the composer for Oz, was born on May 29, 1953. Best known as the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Oingo Boingo, Elfman composed The Simpson's main title theme "as well as the 1989 Batman movie theme. Okay, I'm finally done with the descriptions. (Phew!) First of all, the movie was very, very, very long. Too long, I would say. It wasn't really the movie itself that was long but the commercials before it... Anyways, very colorful movie. It was very similar to Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland to me. Not enough variety, maybe? The style in which the whole thing was filmed was the standard style of almost all Hollywood movies, nowadays. I'm not sure if they're doing it on purpose, (to stay consistent), or if they're just plainly out of new ideas. I don't know. To my taste, the movie was a little bit too consistent and predictable. Very predictable. Movies should have more mystery in them. Maybe I just like mystery stories, I don't know.
