June Talent Show
Hillwood's June talent show, which will be held this year on Friday, June 11. Often, we have performances by students, like musical performances, plays, and magic performances. We always have Ms. Schmit perform with each class, and we usually have the Spanish teacher, who is Senorita Lidia this year, display our skills in conversational Spanish.

What has sports done for me
Sports have affected my life in a huge way. I was always not the best student in my school or anywhere. But, when i play sports I am respected about my athletic talent and not teased or laughed out because of my dyslexia. When I am on the court playing tennis or baseball or even soccer I feel like a whole different person. When I play a sport all my problems melt away. Without sports I think I would be lost in the world with all of my stress.
My favorite sport it tennis. When I was little my dad would play with me everyday after school. Over time all of that playing has payed off. Over the years I have had many coaches play with me and train me for tournaments. My favorite coach was a man named France. He was like a father figure to me. Even though I don't know him anymore because his lessons were to expensive but I still remember him for all of the generosity.
The teachers and how they changed my life
Ms. Tom was the first teacher who taught me who came to hillwood. She taught me a lot in life like life lessons, mathematics, and how to read. She taught in kindergaten, 1, 3, and 4 grade.
In 2nd grade the principal Mr. Grantz taught me. The subject that he was into was mathematics so he taught me a lot of mathematics.
Currently my teacher is Mrs. Woods she is amazing. She has already made us read Romeo and Juliet, The Outsiders, The Pigman, The Pearl, of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, and currently the Oddssey. she is very strong in literature she has also taught us a lot of mathamatics and grammar skills.
Mrs. Grantz is a great person she helps the teachers if they are out she cooks if the cook is out and she is very nice and freindly. She is very down to earth
Ms. Dawson is very nice her strongest subjects are language arts and mathematics. She teaches the kindergarten and first grade.
Ms. Caine is the after school supervisor she is very nice . After school grades 2nd - 4th have a study hall from 3 to 4 so Ms. Caine supervises and even helps student with their work.

Hillwood has affected my life by helping me get better grades than when I was in elementary school, and by doing so, I will be prepared for any high school I go to. They have also helped me to get into a nice small private school that my parents want me to go to but I would rather go Mt. Tam High School in Mill Valley, and the private school is in Sausalito.
My favorite science project that I have done, is, "Form a gas". To do this, you need vinegar, sodium, funnel, a balloon, and a narrow-necked bottle. You are trying to inflate a balloon by putting vinegar and sodium in a bottle put the balloon over it, shake it up, and it will turn into a gas and it will inflate the balloon.
Sports has changed my life by getting me in shape, and toughed me to be a good sport, a team player, and discipline. In my life I have played, basketball, football, and swimming.

Muir Woods
Every year we go to the cabin in Muir Woods for the anniversary. This year, it was the 61st anniversary. When your in 4th grade and up you go to the cabin for a sleepover. There you can go on a hike through Muir Woods. One year, I kissed a banana slug. At this years anniversary, I sang a song with Rubina called Hillwoods Picnic:

Lidia
Lidia is our Spanish teacher. Last year, Ms. Lordes was our teacher. Both of them have taught me so many that I didn't know even if it's not Spanish But information on Spain. In class we are learning grammar and about Spain.
Zack
I'm not talking about Zach the boy, but the dog. I've known Zack for 6 years. Zack is turning 14 in June. Zack is one of the sweetest dogs I know. Zack has hernia in his right leg.

Yearbook Experiment Part I
Explain the upper-graders' stock pick.
Every year at Hillwood in May, the seventh and eighth grades will participate in a Stock Pick Contest. Fifth and sixth graders can volunteer for the race. Each student has a (fake) starting price of $10,000 and should pick at least four companies to buy. Each day at 2 pm, students go to www.wsj.com and find the ending prices of the day. The person who has the most successful group of companies at the end of May gets a prize of $100. The biggest loser gets $5.

How has Hillwood affected your life?
Because Hillwood is a relaxed family-like environment, school isn't as intimidating as it normally is for me, a person who has a phobia of big crowds. It's also nice to be in a place where everyone knows your name, and where you know everyone else's.
How has music affected your life?
Music has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I picked up violin at a young age, and I'm now also learning viola and clarinet. Now, I play and perform in orchestras and quartets, where I sometimes get paid for performances. In addition, I take music a theory class and private lessons.
But even more than music, I think art has made quite an impression on how I see the world. My favorite types of art are manga/anime and pop art. To put it simply, I really love drawing, so much that I want to become an artist when I'm old enough to be able to make my own decisions.

Field Trips
was The Exploratorium . It was good because our class went to a big maze called the Tactile Dome. In the Tactile Dome it was crazy because 1 it was dark,2 it was pretty big,3 and it had a lot of objects around the wall.
The second field trip that was good was watching Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief. It was a good movie in my opinion. We watch this movie because we are going to read The Odyssey and the movie
has some simularty.
The third field trip that was good was going ice skating going to the Deyoung. It was pretty good because learned a lot about King Tut. At ice skating people were getting crazy skating around the ice rink.

School Reminders
Hey Herald readers!! Hope you all had a nice Spring Break and are ready to be back to learn!
Anyways, just some small reminders:
- Next Wednesday, April 21, is Hillwood's Picture Day! Students, please remember to wear the Hillwood uniform. Green sweater, white blouse/polo, and your skirt/skort/pants.
- Also, Hillwood's very first Annual Health Walk-a-Thon will take place next Friday on the 23rd of April! Be sure to get some sponsors. For the Walk-a-Thon, students will be accompanied by teachers and will walk to Crissy Field and back. We will have a BBQ lunch afterwards.

Yearbook Assignments: Irene's Opinions
1. How might you make the world a better place in twenty years?In twenty years, I will recycle, volunteer at non-profit organizations, and not litter. Something I will do to improve our society is to always walk around with a smile on my face. =)
2. What career - interest area - might you choose? What do you want to be when you grow up?
Choosing a career is still a hard decision for me because I still haven't found something I truly have an interest in. I like reading but I don't really want to consider that as a career because it's just a favorite past time. So, I just want to live to the fullest and find something that is of my interest;maybe even exoeriencing different situations will help me decide on a career. I don't want to major in a course that I don't like but am only following because I feel like I have to. I want to choose a major because I want to learn more about it or that I either enjoy immensely.

Throughout the year, the upper-graders went to the Academy of Sciences and watched a video about Bug Reproduction. The movie was in 3-D and detailed about how different types of bugs mate, live, and their life cycle. Around March, the upper-graders started learning about human reproduction and watched a movie called 'The Miracle of Life.' It was an interesting movie that explained the process of an embryo in a woman's womb: how it waas created, its time inside the womb, when it is born. It's a fascinating video and it especially teaches, Do teens want to go through that at their age? Also, throughout the first semester of school, Mrs. Woods, the upper-grader teacher, had all the upper-graders pair up with a partner and do science projects.

Throughout the school year at Hillwood, there are always these gatherings that takes place annually: Hillwood's Anniversary BBQ at the Grantz's cabin, an all-day Christmas Party with a talent shows, the 4th-8th grade overnight at the Grantz's cabin, and the Graduation/Last Day of School Party. Along with that, Hillwood is adding an annual Walk-a-Thon. (Hillwood students,

Most of my favorite songs are in foreign languages. Those include: Fast Car by Namie Amuro, Gee by SNSD, and Eat You Up by BoA. Others include: Daft Punk Technologic, Party People, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
6. What do you like about San Francisco?
San Francisco has a large population of various cultures: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Mexican, Vietnamese, French, Taiwanese, Irish, and Italian. Same with food. There is Chinatown, Japan Town, and Korean markets. Many Mexican, Vietnamese, Taiwanese restaurants along with Irish bars. San Francisco also has many places for hobbies: huge libraries, moutains to ride up on, the zoo for animal lovers, shopping malls, Pier 39, the Golden Gate Bridge, and educational museums. I love how as long as I am in the city, I can find somewhere to go to suit my mood of the day.
7. How would you describe Hillwood to someone who knows nothing about the school?
Hillwood Academic is a school with a small student population. Because of that, each student gets individualized attention from the teacher. This enables them to develop more academically, mentally, and emotionally. Students are more able to voice their opinions and have a better realtionship with the teacher, who in return, are able to recognize each child's weaknesses and stronger fields more quickly. The school director, Eric Grantz, is dedicated to nourish each student that attends Hillwood. He has hired a trusting and equally-dedicated staff who also wants the best for each student. Because the school takes place in the Grantz's home, school hours often feel like we're still at home and has a family atmosphere.8. What are the three best things about Hillwood?
At Hillwood, everyone feels like family. The small classes allows older students to be good role models for younger students and lets them have a "sibling" relationship. Also, I like that the teachers can recognize my strong parts and weaknesses academically and personally. With such small classes, a teacher can concentrate more. There is no peer pressure whatsoever. At most big middle schools, students tend to turn towards bad decisions (ex: drugs, parties, smoking, fornication) because of others teasing and the "What's Cool" list. The students at Hillwood are observed closely for behavior so none of this happens. Also, students here develop good relationships with other students. Good friends don't force us to do stuff right? ;)
9. Make a prediction for twenty years out: We'll have a man and woman on Mars? A new solar system? National health care? Some type of crazy technology?
Of course in twenty years, everything will be more advanced. My imaginations spins to digitalized computers/laptops (where the screen floats and it is touch-screen), more hybrid cars, definitely cloned humans, and much more. Scientists are already studying a lot of aspects of lives such as the human body, reproduction, the brain, etc. All I can say that the future is unpredictable. The world may end. There may be more wars. All continents will form again. New speices of animals. Who knows? A few things I won't be surprised to see will be Julien G.'s face on some sports newscast and Brigette W. as the next top artist.
10. How can we best include the lower-grade students in the yearbook?
Definitly pictures. They record the past year's memories and have familiar faces. Class pictures, field trip pictures, school gathering pictures. Some other ideas are contests, awards, recently
accomplished, and pictures. There can be pictures from Halloween, the Christmas Party, Pajama Day, trips to the local park, etc. Also, remember to include a small mention of the Best of the Bay video about Hillwood.

I can make the world a better place by walking and using bikes instead of cars, and by saving paper. I would probably become a musician when I am older. What I like about San Francisco is that it is a beautiful city with wonderful views and beaches. The three best things about Hillwood school is that it is a private school. It has a little amount of kids, and it has great teachers. I would describe Hillwood school as a great school. In twenty years people will have new machines that go to the past and the future. we can include the lower graders in our year book by putting their photos in it. We can probably put songs of Gayle Schmitt in our year book. Gayle Schmitt is our music teacher.

I think that my best posts is the beat box article with Julien and I. Some other good articles that I did was a movie review of Avatar and and Percy Jackson.
My top six songs of all time are Calling Dr. Love by KISS, Street Fighting Man and Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones, The Final Countdown by Europe, Master Of Puppets by Metallica, and Money for Nothing by Dire Straits.
What I like about San Francisco is that we have the 49ers
The three best things about Hillwood is Zach the dog, the rooms are for good concentration , and the upper grades could go to the park everyday.
I would describe Hillwood as a good small school that would challenge you to your limit. And there is only about 35 kids in the whole school so it is easy to concentrate on your work. And that the school is from kindergarten to eighth grande.

You all can go to the play ''Hamlet'' if you want to see the real play. The story is about a prince named Hamlet who lost his father. The queen says he died of natural causes, but Hamlet suspects his mother, the queen, in murder because she got married a week after the king died. She got married to Hamlet's uncle. Hamlet was a prince of Denmark. Hamlet had a girlfriend named Ophelia. After Hamlet found out that his mother got married to his uncle, he started thinking that all women are like his mother, so he stopped being kind to Ophelia. She was very sad so Ophelia drowned herself in a lake.
Shakespeare wrote many other pieces. Hamlet is just one of them. Some of his tragedy plays are

On Tuesday, March 23, history was made when President Obama's health care overhaul was signed into law.
A victory like this for Democrats certainly couldn't have been gained easily. It cost a year of antagonism and may cost the seats of Democratic lawmakers.
This new law, priced at almost $1 trillion, will make it so that by 2014, every American will have health insurance, or be fined if he doesn't, and will include the 32 million who now lack it. Medicaid will cover more people and insurers won't be able to deny service, but Medicare will be sacrificed.
According to the health care law, starting this year, insurers cannot cancel someone's insurance, if he gets sick or injured. Children will be insured up to age 26.
Many oppose this new law because of its great expense and are accusing it as a "government takeover."

A refugee of the Islamic revolution, Marjane Satrapi, has her own series of graphic novels that compellingly describe her upcoming. Her first book, the one I read, is Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, and the second one isPersepolis 2 : The Story of a Return. There is also an animated movie based on her comic books,Persepolis.
Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood is a moving, but humorous, account of her life from ages six to fourteen. Through a child's eyes, we can witness, in comic strips, the overthrow of the Shah's regime and the Islamic revolution that followed. Not only do we learn about some of Iran's colorful recent history, we see how it all affects an outspoken individual in the most unique and original way.
This book, definitely a page-turner, shows us a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking story of wit, told by an intelligent girl with a different view. This child is dis-unlovable. It's impossible to not love her.
It's rare to find such a book so inspiring, brilliant, and fresh, and I'm giving it five stars.

Miep Gies, a true heroine, recently died at 100 years old on January 11. She and her husband, Jan Gies, helped hide Edith and Otto Frank and their daughters Margot and Anne. After the Franks were arrested, Miep Gies kept Anne Frank's diary, so it could be published in 1947.
During World War II, the Nazis, a fascist society, invaded and occupied large portions of Europe. During these times in Nazi occupied Europe, your life would be threatened if you were Jewish, physically or mentally disabled, a Gypsy, or homosexual. According to many historians, Nazi propaganda spouted that these peoples brought down the human race, referred to as "parasitic races" by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
In 1933, Miep Gies met Otto Frank and his Jewish family when applying for his spice company's open position as a temporary secretary. She and her husband, whom she married in 1943, were both very close to the Franks, which is most likely why they would hide them when their race was being persecuted. Miep was also very much against Nazism, having refused joining the Nazi Women's Association in 1941. Even before sheltering the Franks, she helped the family blend in with Dutch society.
The Gies couple, along with Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleinman, and Bep Voskuijl helped to hide the Franks, the Van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer in the secret room upstairs of the spice company's office, where they remained undiscovered from 1942 to 1944. After the families were arrested and sent to concentration camps, the Gies were sure to take Anne Frank's diary and manuscript papers before the secret Dutch police ransacked the families' possessions.

In our president's State of the Union speech, Mr. Obama tried to reinstate hope in America's working class, as was so prevalent when he was inaugurated last January.
The main points of Pres. Obama's speech covered economic recovery, Afghanistan, education, clean energy, and how we need bipartisanship to solve our problems.
For the economy, our president proposed billing banks for bailouts, prolong unemployment benefits, lower the cost of health care, tax cuts, composing Obama's Recovery Act, or Stimulus Bill. To encourage small businesses, community banks across America will be given $30 billion from Wall Street banks to lend to these businesses. They will also receive tax credits and dismissal from capital gains taxes.
To take steps to a cleaner America, we will invest in clean nuclear power plants, advanced biofuels, and clean coal technologies.
Another topic I will focus on is education. As an eighth-grader aspiring for college or university, I was very taken aback to hear that after 20 years, college debts will be relieved. Many also have realized that in order for America to become a "more perfect nation," we need an educated and innovative work force.

In 1933, Miep Gies met Otto Frank and his Jewish family when applying for his spice company's open position as a temporary secretary. She and her husband, whom she married in 1943, were both very close to the Franks, which is most likely why they would hide them when their race was being persecuted. Miep was also very much against Nazism, having refused joining the Nazi Women's Association in 1941. Even before sheltering the Franks, she helped the family blend in with Dutch society.
The Gies couple, along with Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleinman, and Bep Voskuijl helped to hide the Franks, the Van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer in the secret room upstairs of the spice company's office, where they remained undiscovered from 1942 to 1944. After the families were arrested and sent to concentration camps, the Gies were sure to take Anne Frank's diary and manuscript papers before the secret Dutch police ransacked the families' possessions.

2010: State of the Union Speech — One Student's Angle
In our president's State of the Union speech, Mr. Obama tried to reinstate hope in America's working class, as was so prevalent when he was inaugurated last January.The main points of Pres. Obama's speech covered economic recovery, Afghanistan, education, clean energy, and how we need bipartisanship to solve our problems.
For the economy, our president proposed billing banks for bailouts, prolong unemployment benefits, lower the cost of health care, tax cuts, composing Obama's Recovery Act, or Stimulus Bill. To encourage small businesses, community banks across America will be given $30 billion from Wall Street banks to lend to these businesses. They will also receive tax credits and dismissal from capital gains taxes.
To take steps to a cleaner America, we will invest in clean nuclear power plants, advanced biofuels, and clean coal technologies.
Another topic I will focus on is education. As an eighth-grader aspiring for college or university, I was very taken aback to hear that after 20 years, college debts will be relieved. Many also have realized that in order for America to become a "more perfect nation," we need an educated and innovative work force.

In twenty years, I hope to be able to improve others' lives through art. I want to be able to inspire others to take up and continue art, like how many people have inspired me.

Art is a field that I am not only interested in, it's a field that affects me in every way: the way I look at things, how I solve problems. If possible, I'd like very much to become an artist. I know it would be difficult, but even so, art is something that I aspire to.

Future cars, homes, and travel will definitely be more efficient in terms of energy and space. I also believe that technology will become more integrated with clothing and people. Humanoids and robots will become a part of everyday life in the future.

We could incorporate lower-graders in the yearbook through poetry contests, book reviews, ways to be green, designs for the next Hillwood T-shirt, photos, featured artwork...
