Harriet Tubman was born around January 29, 1882. She was born into slavery.
She grew up with the name of Araminta Ross with 8 siblings by the names of Linah, Mariah Ritty, Soph, Robert, Ben, Rachel, Henry, and Moses.
When Harriet was young, a slave owner threw a fairly large weight at a slave that was trying to run away. The weight missed and hit Harriet in the head. She could not do work for weeks and took a while to heal.
Around 1844 Araminta married a free black man named John Tubman and later changed her name from Araminta to Harriet. Though little is known about their time together, historians know that they had no children together.
Later on, Tubman and her two brothers, Henry and Ben, tried to escape. They made it to Carolina County where they labored for a little while. Harriet's brothers began to have second thoughts and went back dragging Harriet with them.
However, Harriet made a second attempt to escape, this time without her brothers. Her route is quite unclear, but what is known is she used the Underground Railroad to go to the "Promised Land".
Harriet reached Philadelphia and worked odd jobs and earned little money. She later helped many families- including her own- cross through the Underground Railroad.
After helping many, the Civil War began and Harriet worked as a cook, a nurse, spy, and an armed scout.
In 1911, Harriet Tubman died of pneumonia.
