Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 during the Renaissance. His mother was a peasant named Caterina and his father was a legal notary called Antonio da Vinci.
Leonardo was born in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci in Italy. He had no surname so he was called Leonardo da Vinci meaning Leonardo of Vinci.
Little is known about da Vinci's early life so I'm going to skip ahead to some of the highlights.
In 1446 da Vinci was apprenticed to an artist called Andrea di Cione. He worked there for 7 years until moving on.
Leonardo invented the silver lyre in the shape of a horse's head. Leonardo then worked in Milan from 1482 to 1499.
At the start of the Second Italian war the French troops invaded Milan. Da Vinci and his assistant fled to Venice.
He returned to Florence in 1500.
Eventually da Vinci returned to Milan where he lived out the rest of his days.
On May 2, 1519 Leonardo da Vinci died at the age of 67.
